China quake: 22 Killed

An earthquake struck China's extreme southwest near the border with Myanmar Thursday, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 200.

Witnesses reported that a supermarket and a hotel had partially collapsed in the magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua saidthere were reports that people had been buried under debris and that the tremor had caused a power outage across Yingjiang.
The agency said there had been three aftershocks, measuring up to 4.7 degrees on the Richter Scale, within 10 minutes.
Another official on duty at the Yunnan Disaster Relief Center, Gao Shaotang, said many houses had been toppled.
The website of the government earthquake monitoring station said the quake struck in Yunnan just before 1 p.m. local time (12 a.m. ET) at a depth of 6 miles.
The United States Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 5.4.
Quakes of magnitude 5 or more are capable of causing damage.
The epicenter is in a mountainous area 1,500 miles southwest of Beijing, close to the border with Myanmar.
